Morphing wings

In collaboration with colleagues at ETH Zurich, we developed novel composite morphing wing designs. We were interested in investigating aero-structural design tools that enable concurrent aerodynamic shape, wing structure, and composite layup optimization. The projects led to the design, manufacturing, wind tunnel and flight testing of 1) active camber morphing wings incorporating thermally induced bi-stable elements, 2) passive adaptive morphing wings exploiting local instabilities for load alleviation, 3) ultra-thin composite laminate folding wings, and 4) distributed compliance-based lattice structure morphing wings.
